Three modern homes, hidden in classic beauty

A quiet haven, an earthy dream of space, sunlight and natural materials. Three homes that offer a warm and serene refuge from all the noise in our everyday life.

Herengracht 242, located in the centre of Amsterdam, is a classic canal house that has been deemed a national monument. It was originally built in 1614 to be used as a department store.

Today, after three years of extensive renovation, H242 has a completely new foundation. The Collective Studio teamed up with Huizenmij BV, a family-owned real estate development company (est. 1892) with whom we also successfully joined forces for project K60.

All the original details were preserved and restored to keep its authentic charm. Meanwhile, the inside of this classic beauty has been transformed into an oasis of warm serenity: three Northern African-inspired homes.

Deeply influenced by the book ‘Earth & Utopia’ of Egyptian architect Hassan Fathy, known for his earth-constructions and organic shapes, project H242 has an atmosphere in which you feel calm and grounded while experiencing the sensation that comes from being surrounded by organic beauty.

Natural lime, an ancient raw material, is used on the floors, walls and ceilings to create a warm canvas throughout the entire project.

Lime is an organic and sustainable material which is resistant to fading and damage due to its lack of synthetic additives. The natural porousness of lime ensures organic moisture management and a healthy indoor climate.

Every apartment is fully decorated with tailor-made furniture, art, design and exclusively collected objects. In awe of Moroccan craftsmanship, The Collective Studio travelled to Marrakech to collaborate with local artisans and produce handmade and exclusive lamps, rugs and tapestries. In search of organic shapes, The Collective Studio sourced natural treasures like the 150-year- old sun-kissed jugs that now contribute to the authentic atmosphere of project H242.

This project is exclusively sold by DSTRCT Amsterdam. For more information or to schedule a viewing, please contact them at info@dstrct.nl or +31 20 330 94 54
